Research
In my dissertation, entitled: Growing Up Single: Lives of Adult Children of Single Mothers of Color; An Ethnographic Collective Case Study, I researched Black women between the ages of 25-40 who were raised by a Black single mother. As a Black woman raised by a single Black woman, I found that I nor my mother were represented in the current research landscape. This absence was the impetus for my dissertation. My dissertation uses narrative to shift the stigma paradigm that surrounds the (re)presentation of Black single mothers and their children, at any age.
My scholarship contributes new perspectives in motherhood studies, and the connections between parenting, child to adult outcomes and familial responses to the mundanity of the intersectional oppressions of Black women and girls. It also supports scholarship in Black Feminism. My current work utilizes multiple qualitative methods including ethnography, feminist content analysis, and interactive interviews.
